Sailing Past Lady Liberty

We may be a long ways from our home base at Shake-A-Leg in Miami, but our partners in Jersey made us feel right at home.

The Dream is sailing through our summer tour, so far making stops in Annapolis, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and now New Jersey! Our quick two-day stop was pack filled barrier-free sailing with our friends at the Kessler Foundation and Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.

We thank both organizations for their unwavering support of the Impossible Dream, especially the Christopher and Dana Reeve foundation who awarded the Dream with a grant to purchase a new generator to replace our non-functioning piece of ballast! A new generator is essential to running air conditioning to help many of our crew and guests who have suffered spinal cord injuries who need help regulating their body temperatures.

Crystal clear skies, warm temperatures, and good wind made sailing the Hudson River an awe-inspiring experience for our crew and guests. We had stunning views as we circled Lady Liberty and we turned North up the West Side all the way up to 70th Street in Manhattan. The New York skyline was spectacular and from the water, the cityscape was unobstructed.

Working with Kessler Foundation and Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation is one of the most rewarding experiences for the Impossible Dream. Both organizations truly embody our mission and understand the liberation that is experienced onboard a universally designed catamaran. The ability to provide the opportunity for past and present patients to sail is the lifeblood of our Summer Tour and we cannot wait to return to the city in September to meet more amazing people and continue to spread the joy of the Impossible Dream!

Our next stop is Martha's Vineyard July 16th - 20th where we will be working with Camp Jabberwocky and Windemere Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. If you are in the area, contact us for a sail!
